Cargo

Cargo (2018) Movie Poster
India  •    •  119m  •    •  Directed by: Arati Kadav...
A young female astronaut, who joins a recluse astronaut aboard a spaceship, struggles with her job as she interacts with Cargos (dead people on earth arriving for their Post Death Transition).

Review:

Arati Kadav's Cargo is unmistakeanly a film with a unique voice and vision. Within the first minutes, the movie reveals visuals that I had never seen before in Indian cinema. The shots of space and the spaceship were just unbelievable. Vikrant Massey's performance is superb and overall it is awe-inspiring how original this film is.

What I liked most about this movie brilliantly plays with the tensions of oppositional binaries: life and death, the old with the new... I think the film accomplishes this by its vintage sci-fi aesthetic. The pencils, the knobs, and buttons all challenge the way that we are accustomed to think of the "sci-fi look". Even the design of the space ship, which Kadav once mentions in an interview is inspired by the movement of jellyfish, comes to brilliantly manifest the juxtaposition of the natural and the mechanic.
