All in all, I'd say this is a fairly good, if fairly standard (and derivative), science fiction flick. Take Invasion of the Body Snatchers, add a healthy dose of the atmosphereplot elements of Jennifer's Body, plus a tinge of 80s nostalgia in the vein of Return of the Living Dead 2 and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and you have yourself Assimilate (2019) aka "Replicate."

The film is decently shot, is well-paced, and features above average performances. The story is a complete and total rip-off of Jack Finney's magazine serial, but because of the technical polish still feels fresh and even a bit affecting. What's surprising is the director's attention to detail (i.e. two character recognizing each other's humanity through CUs of their tears). Little moments such as these are poignant contrasts to otherwise business-as-usual storytelling.

All in all, could make for fun viewing on a rainy Sunday afternoon. For kids, it's perfectly age appropriate minus a few scenes, and could make for a nice, family friendly introductory course to more mature and superior genre films in the future. The Stars and Stripes Grade for this: B-, A for Effort.
